Volunteer with Us
Bird Alliance of Central Indiana’s volunteers are the heart of its work in the community and beyond. Because of our volunteers, we are able to lead birding field trips, conservation workdays, bird surveys and rescues, and to have a presence at special community events.
BACI is growing! We’re in the process of expanding our conservation, education, and outreach offerings and want to bring the joy of birds to more of the region. If you have time or a talent that’s for the birds, take a peek through our volunteer opportunities below, then fill out the volunteer application to get started.
Some parts of our Volunteer Team are still under construction! We’re getting a volunteer portal ready for you, but until then, follow these steps:
- Fill out the volunteer application above to join a team. Our coordinator Olivia will get you connected to the right Team Chair.
- Our coordinator or a Team Chair will email volunteers as available opportunities arise. Send an email response if you’re interested in helping out at an event.
- After you’ve served at an event, report your hours to the coordinator via email.
Any questions can be directed to Olivia Bautch at falcon_515@outlook.com.
Accessibility Note: BACI is committed to being a community for all bird-lovers. However, some of our volunteer tasks may not be possible for different individuals, and we want to be transparent about that. If you have a disability we’d be happy to work with you to find an event that matches your interests and abilities.
Volunteer Teams
Bird Safe Indy Team
The Bird Safe Indy (BSI) Team is on the front lines studying and saving vulnerable birds- specifically migratory species- downtown Indianapolis and on campus. As a BSI Team member, you’re speaking up for bird-safe practices with the people in charge of our city and its buildings, and collecting data that drives results.
Bird Safe Indy Chair: Deb Patrick — loi@birdallianceofcentralindiana.org

Conservation Team
The Conservation Team finds purpose in rolling up their sleeves and getting their hands dirty! As a Conservation Team member, you’re helping to reverse bird declines by creating habitat and monitoring populations of the species who call Central Indiana home through the year, with tangible results.
Conservation Chair: Pat Stutz — pat.stutz@indy.gov
Field Trip Team
The BACI Field Trip Team is made up of charismatic leaders who know their birds! While leading field trips ranging from Lakewatches to Woodcock Walks to local beginner hikes, volunteers create direct connections between guests and the natural world.
Field Trip Chair: Laurie Voss — lauriev117@gmail.com

Event Ambassador Team
BACI’s Event Ambassadors get to be the face of the chapter at fun community events like farmers’ markets, BirdFest, PENROD, and more. These high-energy spaces are great for natural conversations about bird life and regional conservation issues, and they are where we collect signatures for environmental petitions.
Coordinator: Olivia Bautch — falcon_515@outlook.com
Communications Team
The Communications Team is for birdy creatives. These roles are remote and done on your own time; write custom articles or share your favorite photos to be published. BACI credits all writers and photographers.
As a Communications Team member, you get an artistic outlet that lets you bring bird joy and urgent conservation news to a large metropolitan readership through media.
