Did you know that many birds migrate at night, and did you know that one can even observe them doing so?

If you want to witness this phenomenon yourself, look no further than the Eagle Creek Ornithology Center’s nocturnal migrant program! Each fall, hundreds of species of songbirds make the perilous journey from their Canadian breeding grounds to the jungles of South America.

Bird Alliance’s 20-40ish crew gets a special session of this program with Eagle Creek Ornithology Center Naturalist, Aidan Rominger, on Thursday September 24 from 6pm-8:30pm, where he will go through how to properly ID many of these migrating songbird species at night, by listening to flight calls given by each species. He will also go into depth on how to best view these migrating songbirds under the stars!

REGISTRATION: Pre-registration required via indyparks.org. $8/person. Park admission is covered by your registration fee! $4 discount for current BACI/ABAS members! To receive your BACI/ABAS member discount code, email Olivia at engagement@birdallianceofcentralindiana.org.

LOCATION: Drop into the Ornithology Center at 6pm for s’mores and hangs. At 6:30pm, we’ll meet Aidan inside the classroom to learn ID, and then we’ll head to Coffer Dam to listen for any migrating songbirds, as well as see if we can view them flying past the moon using a scope and binoculars.

PREPARATION & ACCESS CONSIDERATIONS: The terrain of coffer dam is paved/gravel on the North end and dirt/roots/hilly on the South end. The program will take place at sunset and after, in a low light setting. Let us know if you need accommodations and we will plan the hike accordingly! Eagle Creek Park closes at 9pm and all cars must be out of the park gates by this time.
