August means shorebird migration in Indiana! TBT is taking you out to scout “shorbs” at one of the region’s most productive locations and beach destinations: Lebanon Business Park. Okay, that last part isn’t true, but prior August reports at this Boone County hotspot have included Semipalmated, White-rumped, Baird’s, and Stilt Sandpipers, Black-necked Stilt, Dunlin, and Ruddy Turnstone. Nearby shorebird spots being farmed this year may increase birds gathering at this location.

We’ll meet up with Chandler Roberts, former ABAS Birdathon Chair and our caravan leader, at 6:30pm at the Zionsville Meijer (address is 6650 Whitestown Pkwy, Zionsville, IN 46077). From there we will explore the ponds and grassy areas at the business park. If the location is not productive or if we have time, we will head south to Starling Nature Sanctuary to scout their mudflats where many of the same sandpiper species are spotted in August. Each field trip location is 15-20 minutes apart, and we will head back to our cars in Zionsville around 8:30pm

PREPARATION & ACCESS CONSIDERATIONS: This trip will include driving, but much birding will be done outside the vehicle, standing or sitting to look through scopes and binoculars. There are no trails at the business park; trails at Starling are smooth dirt but may be muddy near the water. Be prepared to maneuver through tall grasses for the best view of birds at the business park. Dress for sunset, insects, and cooler temperatures late.

REGISTRATION: This field trip is limited to 15 participants and registration is required. Priority registration for BACI(ABAS) members until August 5, but non-members should sign up early, as once registration is open, it’s first come first serve.
