SUMMARY:Warblers and Migrants – Eagle Creek Park
DESCRIPTION:Join birders extraordinaire Lisa and Randy Vanderbilt as we look for migrating fall warblers. We’ll meet at 8:00 am in the parking lot at the marina and bird along the road leading to the marina\, as well as the open area and trails near the parking lot. Walking distance will be minimal and we’ll be on both paved roads and well-defined\, hard-packed dirt trails.  There are indoor restrooms at the marina. \nThere is no fee for the field trip but an admission fee is required at the entrance to Eagle Creek Park. Annual passes for frequent park visits are available. The field trip is limited to 12 participants and registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Join ABAS at The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park at Newfields for bird hikes on this beautiful property along the White River and Central Canal. The hikes will be led by ABAS President Rob Ripma. \nMeet at the free parking at the loop just ¼ mile west of the 38th Street entrance to Newfields. The address given for this event is approximate. You’ll need to be heading west on 38th Street to enter the loop parking area. Take the White River Pkwy East exit. \nThe hike is free and open to the public. Registration is requested by emailing us at info@birdallianceofcentralindiana.org. \nDepending on the rules at the time\, masks will likely be required for most of the hike. There may be times we can spread out and take a quick break from the masks. Check the ABAS calendar to be sure the hike isn’t canceled. \n  \nAbout Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park: 100 Acres\nOn one hundred acres along the west side of Newfields\, just east of White River\, you’ll find Fairbanks Park. Explore woodlands\, wetlands\, meadows\, and the shoreline of a 35-acre lake. It’s one of the largest museum art parks in the country\, and unlike most\, continues to commission temporary\, site-responsive artworks. \nAs a former farm and later gravel quarry\, Fairbanks Park has a history of disturbance that has resulted in a mix of early successional woodlands\, some mature woodlands\, wetlands\, and a lake. This habitat diversity has created a property with the ability to host niche species of several different habitat types. Newfields strives to maintain that habitat diversity by invasive species removal and planting of Indiana native plant species in all areas of the Park. \nRecent additions include a nesting platform built to attract birds of prey\, a wild grass labyrinth\, and a variety of bird feeding and viewing stations.

The trails are well defined and the terrain is flat. \nThe Nature Center opens at 10:00 am and has modern restrooms\, as well as a bird feeding viewing area. \nThere is no fee for the field trip. However\, it is limited to 10 participants\, and registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Experienced birders from ABAS will lead a bird hike sponsored by the Friends of Marott Woods Nature Preserve. Beginning birders welcome. This should be prime time for fall migration. The preserve has dirt trails and there are decent hill climbs so wear appropriate footwear. Don’t forget to bring your binoculars. \nThe bird hike is free and no advanced registration is required. SUMMARY:Bats of Indiana - And Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Join Ryan Slack for our September program about bats. He will touch upon everything from myths surrounding bats\, their classification and specialized anatomy\, their habits\, conservation\, why bats are important\, the threats they face\, bat species native to Indiana\, the truth about bats and rabies\, and the latest in bat call analysis. \nRyan holds a BS from Purdue University in Wildlife Science. He is currently a Principal at the engineering consulting firm Civil & Environmental Consultants\, Inc. (CEC) and also the Ecological Practice lead of their Indianapolis office.  In this position\, he coordinates projects involving threatened and endangered species\, the Endangered Species Act\, and the National Environmental Policy.  He holds CEC’s Federal Bat Scientific Collecting Permit\, which is valid for the entire range of Indiana bats and northern long-eared bats. \nWe respectfully request that any non-vaccinated attendees wear masks. \nPhoto courtesy of Chuck Anderson.

DESCRIPTION:Join ABAS at The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park at Newfields for bird hikes on this beautiful property along the White River and Central Canal. The hikes will be led by ABAS President Rob Ripma. \nMeet at the free parking at the loop just ¼ mile west of the 38th Street entrance to Newfields. The address given for this event is approximate. You’ll need to be heading west on 38th Street to enter the loop parking area. Take the White River Pkwy East exit. \nThe hike is free and open to the public. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park: 100 Acres\nOn one hundred acres along the west side of Newfields\, just east of White River\, you’ll find Fairbanks Park. Explore woodlands\, wetlands\, meadows\, and the shoreline of a 35-acre lake. It’s one of the largest museum art parks in the country\, and unlike most\, continues to commission temporary\, site-responsive artworks. \nAs a former farm and later gravel quarry\, Fairbanks Park has a history of disturbance that has resulted in a mix of early successional woodlands\, some mature woodlands\, wetlands\, and a lake. This habitat diversity has created a property with the ability to host niche species of several different habitat types. Newfields strives to maintain that habitat diversity by invasive species removal and planting of Indiana native plant species in all areas of the Park. \nRecent additions include a nesting platform built to attract birds of prey\, a wild grass labyrinth\, and a variety of bird feeding and viewing stations.

Meet us at 9:00 am at the Ornithology Center. \nThis event is free\, though a gate fee to Eagle Creek Park applies. \nMasks will be required for the majority of the hike. There may be times when we can spread out and take a break from the masks.
