DESCRIPTION:Lye Creek Prairie Burn\nApril 16\, 2023 – 8:30 am – 11:00 am \nJoin Laurie Voss\, ABAS Recording Secretary and experienced bird hike leader\, on a field trip to the Lye Creek Prairie Burn\, aka “The Burn”\, in search of migrating Smith’s Longspurs and spring migrants. The Burn is located in Montgomery County and is the most reliable place for viewing Smith’s Longspurs in Indiana. We may be joined by Clint Murray who owns the property and manages it specifically for the Longspurs and other birds. \nThe field trip is limited to 12 participants and registration is required. ABAS members only can register prior to April 2nd\, after which time\, if there are spots available\, anyone may register. To register email Chuck Anderson at chucka1999@aol.com or text Chuck at (317) 767-5438. \nThe Burn is on County Road 650 N in Montgomery County in the general area of Crawfordsville. To get there from I74 take the US 231 exit and go north just under 3 miles to County Road 550 N. Take a right on County Road 550 N for just over a mile to County Road 150 E. Take a left on County Road 150 E and continue to County Road 650 N. Take a right on County Road 650 N for less than a mile to The Burn which will be on the right. The address given is approximate. SUMMARY:Winter Lakefront Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join experienced birder\, field trip leader\, and IAS board member Scott Enochs as he leads you along the Indiana Lake Michigan lakeshore in search of wintering gulls\, waterfowl\, and any vagrants that may be in the area. We’ll meet at Washington Park Beach in Michigan City (41.7281N 86.9040W) at 8:00 am local time (9:00 am EST). We will spend the morning and early afternoon visiting various sites around the Indiana lakeshore. Little time will be spent hiking\, though some hiking terrain would be considered moderate to rugged. Make sure you dress appropriately for the weather conditions. Most of the time will be spent traveling to as many sites as possible to scan the lake. \nParticipants can expect to return to the Indianapolis area around 6:00 pm EST.  There may be a break for lunch in the Gary/Chesterton area. \nThe field trip is free but is limited to 10 participants and registration is required. Priority registration is available to ABAS members through January 1\, 2023. After that date\, if any open spots remain\, non-members may register. The workshop will be presented by Indiana Wildlife Federation’s Habitat Programs Manager Aaron Stump. \nOur native species are best suited for the soil and weather conditions in Indiana and are the perfect plants to grow in your yard. They require no fertilizer\, no pesticides\, and less water than non-native species\, all while attracting and supporting Indiana’s wildlife. Aaron’s expertise in native plants and Indiana habitats will be a great resource for anyone interested in transforming their outdoor space into a wildlife oasis.

DESCRIPTION:The Eagle Creek Valley Christmas Bird Count (CBC)\, sponsored by ABAS\, takes place within a 15-mile-diameter circle centered in Eagle Creek Park on the northwest side of Indianapolis. This year the count will be held on Sunday December 18\, 8:00 am – 12:00 pm with a pitch-in lunch for all participants at the Ornithology Center 12:00pm – 1:00 pm. \n To participate\, please reach out to the count coordinator\, Aidan Rominger\, by December 1 so birding teams can be formed and count plans made in advance. Call the Ornithology Center at (317) 327-2473\, or email aidan.rominger@indy.gov. Stop by the Ornithology Center (6515 Delong Road\, Indianapolis\, IN 46278) to pick up an information packet for your assigned area the week before the count\, December 5 – 10\, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm. \n If you are a beginning birder\, you may be able to join a group that includes at least one experienced birdwatcher. This will be the 112th anniversary of the Indianapolis CBC\, which was first held in December 1910. \nNationwide\, more than 2\,000 CBCs are conducted during the holiday season. National Audubon Society and other organizations use the data collected in this longest-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations and to help guide conservation actions. General information about the National Audubon Society and the Annual Christmas Bird Count can be found at www.audubon.org/conservation/join-christmas-bird-count. \nThe Indianapolis CBC\, sponsored by ABAS\, takes place within a 15-mile-diameter circle covering the northeast side of Indianapolis\, with the center point being in Fort Harrison State Park. \nIf you are a beginning birder\, you will be able to join a group that includes at least one experienced birdwatcher. The address given for this event is approximate. You’ll need to be heading west on 38th Street to enter the loop parking area. Take the White River Pkwy East exit. \nThe hike is free and open to the public. Registration is requested by emailing us at info@birdallianceofcentralindiana.org. \n  \nAbout Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park: 100 Acres\nOn one hundred acres along the west side of Newfields\, just east of White River\, you’ll find Fairbanks Park. Explore woodlands\, wetlands\, meadows\, and the shoreline of a 35-acre lake. It’s one of the largest museum art parks in the country\, and unlike most\, continues to commission temporary\, site-responsive artworks. \nAs a former farm and later gravel quarry\, Fairbanks Park has a history of disturbance that has resulted in a mix of early successional woodlands\, some mature woodlands\, wetlands\, and a lake. This habitat diversity has created a property with the ability to host niche species of several different habitat types. Newfields strives to maintain that habitat diversity by invasive species removal and planting of Indiana native plant species in all areas of the Park. \nRecent additions include a nesting platform built to attract birds of prey\, a wild grass labyrinth\, and a variety of bird feeding and viewing stations.

SUMMARY:Caves and Caving in Indiana
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Dean Wiseman is a professor of biology at the University of Indianapolis with multidisciplinary expertise in physiology\, cell biology\, pathophysiology and pharmacology. He is also an avid caver and will be sharing his knowledge of caving with us this December. Dean has vast caving experience beyond Indiana such as 5 expeditions to Lechuguilla\, multiple visits to Mammoth Cave\, and his ongoing participation in ground-breaking surveys of Vietnam’s Tiger Cave System. However\, he is also a very avid caver within the state as a former director and active member of the Central Indiana Grotto—our local chapter of the National Speleological Society. This talk will be a great opportunity for those curious about caving in Indiana and ways to get involved in the local speleological scene.

SUMMARY:Waterfowl at Celery Bog - FULL
DESCRIPTION:Contact Chuck Anderson to be put on a standby list for this FULL field trip. \nJoin ABAS President and Field Trip Chair Chuck Anderson for a field trip to Celery Bog Nature Area. This will be a great opportunity to view waterfowl and year-round resident birds. Target birds are waterfowl\, including Northern Pintail\, Redhead\, and Canvasback ducks. Swans\, Greater White-fronted Goose\, and various species of grebe also frequent Celery Bog. \nThe terrain is flat and trails are well managed. The hike will be 2 to 2.5 miles. Restrooms are available at the Lilly Nature Center. Bring binoculars and a spotting scope if you have one. Dress appropriately for the weather. We’ll meet at 8:00 am in the first parking lot on the right\, inside the park. \nThere is no fee for the field trip. However\, it is limited to 12 participants\, and registration is required. Priority registration is available for ABAS members through October 15\, 2022\, at which time if there are any spots open\, registration will be open to non-members.
