SUMMARY:Scouting for Shorbs with Thirty\, Birdy & Thriving
DESCRIPTION:August means shorebird migration in Indiana! TBT is taking you out to scout “shorbs” at one of the region’s most productive locations and beach destinations: Lebanon Business Park. Okay\, that last part isn’t true\, but prior August reports at this Boone County hotspot have included Semipalmated\, White-rumped\, Baird’s\, and Stilt Sandpipers\, Black-necked Stilt\, Dunlin\, and Ruddy Turnstone. Nearby shorebird spots being farmed this year may increase birds gathering at this location. \n  \nWe’ll meet up with Chandler Roberts\, former ABAS Birdathon Chair and our caravan leader\, at 6:30pm at the Zionsville Meijer (address is 6650 Whitestown Pkwy\, Zionsville\, IN 46077). From there we will explore the ponds and grassy areas at the business park. If the location is not productive or if we have time\, we will head south to Starling Nature Sanctuary to scout their mudflats where many of the same sandpiper species are spotted in August. Each field trip location is 15-20 minutes apart\, and we will head back to our cars in Zionsville around 8:30pm \n  \nPREPARATION & ACCESS CONSIDERATIONS: This trip will include driving\, but much birding will be done outside the vehicle\, standing or sitting to look through scopes and binoculars. There are no trails at the business park; trails at Starling are smooth dirt but may be muddy near the water. Be prepared to maneuver through tall grasses for the best view of birds at the business park. Dress for sunset\, insects\, and cooler temperatures late. \n  \nREGISTRATION: This field trip is limited to 15 participants and registration is required. Priority registration for BACI(ABAS) members until August 5\, but non-members should sign up early\, as once registration is open\, it’s first come first serve. SUMMARY:Summer Wetlands with Thirty\, Birdy & Thriving
DESCRIPTION:What better way is there to spend a summer day than at the waterfront? Our June event is giving water\, sunshine\, open water birds\, and icy treats at undeniably the most prolific and accessible birding spot in the Indianapolis region\, Eagle Creek Park. \n  \nWe’ll meet up with Chandler Roberts\, former ABAS Birdathon Chair and our bird guide for the morning\, at the Eagle Creek Park Marina. From there we might explore any of several wetland spots\, based on what’s been observed recently. These may include: the North Loop\, Coffer Dam\, and Starling Nature Sanctuary\, which usually bring herons\, egrets\, and terns to their mudflats\, and many breeding songbirds and warblers to the forests. We can also try for the Neotropic Cormorant for anyone who has not yet seen one. \n  \nAfter an hour and a half or so of birding\, we’ll head back to the Marina with some sorbet to hang out. Several pairs of binoculars will be available for those who need them. We will be walking most of the field trip on various trail surfaces which include rough gravel\, grass\, bridges\, and dirt paths with roots/rocks. Coffer Dam has one hill with several turns before the gravel path. Most of the field trip will be under direct sunlight\, so bring hats\, water\, sunscreen\, and dress accordingly. \n  \nTBT is back in the city\, so we have room for lots of friends! This field trip is limited to 20 participants and registration is required. Priority registration for ABAS members until June 6\, but non-members should sign up early\, as once registration is open\, it’s first come first serve. TBT is designed for birders aged 20-40ish to make friends who share their hobby. \n  \nWhen you sign up\, please indicate if you are a member or not and include your phone number. DESCRIPTION:Amos Butler Audubon Society and Friends of Marott Woods Nature Preserve join together for a\nlate migrant hike at the preserve on May 23\, 2026 from 8:30-11:00 am. Our leaders\, Matthew\nKrohn and Brandon Roberts\, have keen ears and eyes for finding our late warblers\, other\nmigrants such as a possible Olive-sided Flycatcher\, and nesting birds as well.\nMarott Woods Nature Preserve is a 99-acre site that runs along Williams Creek\, a tributary of\nthe White River. Trails wind their way around the beautiful old growth woods and along the\ncreek.\nThe park is bordered on the north by 75th Street and on the west by College Ave. There is a\nsmall parking area off of College Ave north of 73rd Street. If that area is full\, there may be\nadditional parking in the neighborhood south of the park. Priority registration is available to ABAS members until April 1\, but non-members should sign up early\, as once registration is open\, it is first come first serve. \n  \nWe will meet near the picnic tables and cabin at the trailhead\, and several pairs of binoculars will be available for those who need them. Trail surfaces include rough gravel\, boardwalks\, and dirt paths with roots/rocks. While gravel trails in grassland and swamp portions only have one incline\, there is greater variation in terrain in the forest habitat.
