SUMMARY:Scouting for Shorbs with Thirty\, Birdy & Thriving
DESCRIPTION:August means shorebird migration in Indiana! TBT is taking you out to scout “shorbs” at one of the region’s most productive locations and beach destinations: Lebanon Business Park. Okay\, that last part isn’t true\, but prior August reports at this Boone County hotspot have included Semipalmated\, White-rumped\, Baird’s\, and Stilt Sandpipers\, Black-necked Stilt\, Dunlin\, and Ruddy Turnstone. Nearby shorebird spots being farmed this year may increase birds gathering at this location. \n  \nWe’ll meet up with Chandler Roberts\, former ABAS Birdathon Chair and our caravan leader\, at 6:30pm at the Zionsville Meijer (address is 6650 Whitestown Pkwy\, Zionsville\, IN 46077). From there we will explore the ponds and grassy areas at the business park. If the location is not productive or if we have time\, we will head south to Starling Nature Sanctuary to scout their mudflats where many of the same sandpiper species are spotted in August. Each field trip location is 15-20 minutes apart\, and we will head back to our cars in Zionsville around 8:30pm \n  \nPREPARATION & ACCESS CONSIDERATIONS: This trip will include driving\, but much birding will be done outside the vehicle\, standing or sitting to look through scopes and binoculars. There are no trails at the business park; trails at Starling are smooth dirt but may be muddy near the water. Be prepared to maneuver through tall grasses for the best view of birds at the business park. Dress for sunset\, insects\, and cooler temperatures late. \n  \nREGISTRATION: This field trip is limited to 15 participants and registration is required. Priority registration for BACI(ABAS) members until August 5\, but non-members should sign up early\, as once registration is open\, it’s first come first serve. DESCRIPTION:Join field trip leaders John Cassady and Richard Garrett for a Saturday at Lake Michigan to look for fall migrants. This is an opportunity for anyone curious or interested in how to do a lake watch to learn from two of the state’s most experienced lake watchers.  \n  \nFor those curious about what a lake watch is\, it is an opportunity to witness the southern movement of passerines\, shorebirds\, gulls\, waterfowl\, and if lucky\, witness the power and aerial maneuvering of a Jaeger. There are three possible Jaegers that have been viewed from Lake Michigan—Long-tailed\, Parasitic\, and Pomarine Jaeger. In September\, our best chance would be to see a Parasitic Jaeger. Pomarine Jaegers are seen in late fall\, if at all.  \n  \nThis field trip will take place on Saturday\, September 12\, beginning a half hour before dawn and run until 10:00 am Central Time. Participants are welcome to stay longer if desired.  \n  \nPREPARATION & ACCESS CONSIDERATIONS: The terrain is sand dunes and difficult to walk on. A scope is necessary for this field trip as many of the birds will be far out into the lake. Be sure to bring sunscreen\, water\, food\, and possibly a folding chair. You can stand or sit and use a scope as well. Plan for many stationary hours in the sun and weather and expect the air temperature to be 10 degrees cooler than inland. \n  \nLOCATION: Meet at Marquette Park on the sand dune behind the concession stand\, if weather is agreeable. If there is a strong wind\, we will meet on the east side of the concession stand. Parking is along the side of the road that parallels the lakefront. This year the parking is quite expensive and requires an app to park there. \n  \nTo help with the expense\, participants can carpool if desired by meeting at the Flying J Travel Center on IN 51 and I 94 in Lake Station. It is about 10 minutes from Marquette Park.  \nThis address is: 1401 Ripley Street\, Lake Station\, IN 46405. I would suggest meeting there at 5:30 am CT. Parking here should not be an issue but I would park away from the entrance to the building. \n  \nREGISTRATION: There is a maximum of 8 people who can register for this trip. BACI(ABAS) members will have priority until August 15\, but don’t hesitate to sign up if you are interested as non-members are first come first serve. SUMMARY:Eagle Creek Fall Migrant Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:With fall migration in full swing\, the trees should be active with warblers\, vireos\, thrushes\, and more. Please join experienced birders\, Becky Heck and Brandon Roberts\, for a Fall Migrant Field Trip at Eagle Creek Park on Saturday\, September 19\, from 8:00 am to 11:00 am. Fall warblers can be challenging with their variable plumages but being with experienced birders can help with the identification.  \n  \nEagle Creek Park is the premier spot in Central Indiana for warblers\, vireos\, sparrows\, as well as other passerines on their way to the wintering grounds. The diverse habitats that offer a variety of food for the birds include woods\, wetlands\, prairies\, and the reservoir which attracts waterfowl.  \n  \nPREPARATION & ACCESS CONSIDERATIONS: Wear shoes appropriate for hiking and bring your binoculars. There is an asphalt main road to the parking lot\, but trails are loose gravel and there is a long staircase on one end of the trail. We will visit additional\, to-be-determined parts of the park after the Marina which may have different terrains and conditions. \n  \nLOCATION: This field trip will begin at the Marina which acts as a migrant trap for birds in the morning hours. The Marina is accessed from a turn-off in the middle of the park. You can reach it from either the 71st or 56th Street entrances. Other birding sites for the day will be determined as the morning unfolds.   \n  \nREGISTRATION: The field trip is limited to 10 participants so that each person has an opportunity to see the birds. Please join experienced birders Becky Heck and Brandon Roberts for a Fall Migrant Field Trip at Eagle Creek Park on Saturday September 19 from 8:00 am to 11:00 am. Fall warblers can be challenging with their variable plumages but being with experienced birders can help with the identification.  \n  \nEagle Creek Park is the premier spot in Central Indiana for warblers vireos sparrows as well as other passerines on their way to the wintering grounds. The diverse habitats that offer a variety of food for the birds include woods wetlands prairies and the reservoir which attracts waterfowl.  \n  \nPREPARATION & ACCESS CONSIDERATIONS: Wear shoes appropriate for hiking and bring your binoculars. There is an asphalt main road to the parking lot but trails are loose gravel and there is a long staircase on one end of the trail. We will visit additional to-be-determined parts of the park after the Marina which may have different terrains and conditions. \n  \n This field trip will begin at the Marina which acts as a migrant trap for birds in the morning hours. The Marina is accessed from a turn-off in the middle of the park. You can reach it from either the 71st or 56th Street entrances. Other birding sites for the day will be determined as the morning unfolds.   \n  \nREGISTRATION: The field trip is limited to 10 participants so that each person has an opportunity to see the birds. BACI(ABAS) members will have priority until September 1 but don’t hesitate to sign up as non-members are first come first serve. To sign up please email Laurie Voss at laurievoss25@gmail.com. Learning how to identify all of them can be overwhelming Join a Hamilton Co Parks Naturalist and other guest leaders Sunday and Wednesday mornings and we will learn together. This will be a great opportunity for birdwatchers of all levels. You may begin anytime during the season and come as often as you like. Pre-registration is not required. Don’t forget your binoculars! \nThese hikes meet in the north parking lot of Cool Creek Park past the Nature Center.
