DESCRIPTION:The Eagle Creek Valley Christmas Bird Count (CBC)\, sponsored by ABAS\, takes place within a 15-mile-diameter circle centered in Eagle Creek Park on the northwest side of Indianapolis. This year the count will be held on Sunday December 18\, 8:00 am – 12:00 pm with a pitch-in lunch for all participants at the Ornithology Center 12:00pm – 1:00 pm. \n To participate\, please reach out to the count coordinator\, Aidan Rominger\, by December 1 so birding teams can be formed and count plans made in advance. Call the Ornithology Center at (317) 327-2473\, or email aidan.rominger@indy.gov. Stop by the Ornithology Center (6515 Delong Road\, Indianapolis\, IN 46278) to pick up an information packet for your assigned area the week before the count\, December 5 – 10\, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm. \n If you are a beginning birder\, you may be able to join a group that includes at least one experienced birdwatcher. In addition\, if your home is within the boundaries of the count circle\, you can report the birds that visit your feeder once you have arranged to do so with the count compiler.

DESCRIPTION:Join a naturalist for a bark ID lesson\, designed for homeschoolers and a guardian. In the wintertime\, trees without their leaves can be very intimidating for identification! Knowing trees by their bark is an excellent way to refine your identification skills and develop a greater sense of place in nature. During our lesson\, we will learn tips & tricks for tree ID and we will focus on color\, texture\, and characteristic pattern differences that will help you learn your trees in their dormant state. Binoculars will be provided to look at bark and birds as we find them and participants will be given a tree ID handout to foster continued learning. Content covered during this lesson & hike is best suited for children 10-14. We encourage homeschoolers to attend due to the time of this program. DESCRIPTION:Join Eagle Creek Ornithology Center naturalists Aidan Rominger and Frank Brown on Tuesday November 19th\, from 10:30am-12:30pm on a birding hike around the bird sanctuary in search of winter bird species within the park! We will target a variety of waterfowl\, sparrows\, finches and more! This is a great opportunity for beginner birders to get hands on identification experience in the field with a skilled naturalist and experienced birder! The majority of the program will be hiking so dress accordingly for the colder weather. Feel free to pack a lunch as we will end the day inside the Ornithology Center classroom eating lunch together. SUMMARY:Gardening for Birds: Seed Saving
DESCRIPTION:Join us on October 8\, 2024\, from 5:30 to 7:00 PM at the Ornithology Center (OC) to learn how to prepare native plant seeds in the fall for germination over the winter\, to support wildlife\, especially birds! Join for a brief presentation followed by a garden tour\, then practice separating pre-collected seeds & build two germination containers\, one for the center and one for you to take home! Containers created by participants for the OC will be planted in the wildlife gardens in the spring. Participants can take home a seed container of their own as well to observe the final stages of germination and to plant at their own homes! \nAll materials will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring a clean plastic container (think plastic milk jug\, gallon or half or 2L soda bottle) to utilize in the workshop. Preregistration is required\, $15/participant. This program is geared towards adults with an interest in gardening with native plants\, youth ages 12+ are welcome to register with their adult guardian. DESCRIPTION:The Nina Mason Pulliam EcoLab is a wonderful place to bird watch\, with over 165 different species sightings being recorded since 2002. No experience is necessary. The field trip will be led by Dr. David Benson. Dave is the Director of the Nina Mason Pulliam EcoLab & Associate Professor of Biology at Marian University. \nWe will meet at the St. Francis Colonnade just west of the Allison Mansion on the campus of Marian University at 8:00 am. The field trip is limited to 10 participants and early registration is offered to ABAS members until Aug. 31st after which time non-members may register if there are any open spots. Don’t forget to bring your binoculars. A couple of pairs will be available to lend\, if needed. \nThis field trip is expected to fill quickly. Join Eagle Creek Ornithology Center naturalist\, Aidan Rominger\, on Wednesday\, September 18th\, from 7:00-8:30 pm where he will go through how to properly ID many of these migrating songbird species at night\, by listening to flight calls given by each species. He will also go into depth on how to best view these migrating songbirds under the stars! SUMMARY:Forest Bathing Walk
DESCRIPTION:Forest Bathing\, also known as Forest Therapy\, is a nature-based wellness practice. This experience can be described as a sensory\, immersive\, and slow walk. During a walk\, we will use our senses to “bathe” in our surroundings\, using eyes\, ears\, hands\, nose\, body\, and heart to experience the world around us. This practice will be facilitated by Certified Association of Nature & Forest Therapy (ANFT) Guide & Ornithology Center Assistant Manager\, Donna Riner. During the walk\, your guide will facilitate invitations\, or prompts\, to support sensory connection to nature and provide opportunities for sharing between invitations. We will spend approximately two hours together\, with time built in for walking short distances\, wandering\, exploring\, sitting\, and sharing. Unlike a guided hike\, this walk is short\, covering only a half mile or so.
