No experience is necessary\, and the hike will be led by one of the bird experts at Marian University. The only things that are necessary are binoculars and a little bit of patience! \nWe will meet at the St. Francis statue just west of the Allison Mansion on the Marian campus at 8:00 am . DESCRIPTION:Join DCNP Board member Brian Cunningham for an evening walk at Daubenspeck Community Nature Park (DCNP)\, a great spot to view displaying American Woodcocks. \nWoodcocks have a very acrobatic mating display that they perform at dusk known as the sky dance. While waiting for woodcocks\, we will check the prairie and nearby woods for birds that may be going to roost in the park for the evening. \nWe will meet at 6:30 pm in the DCNP parking lot. DESCRIPTION:The Eagle Creek Valley Christmas Bird Count (CBC)\, sponsored by ABAS\, takes place within a 15-mile-diameter circle centered in Eagle Creek Park on the northwest side of Indianapolis. This year the count will be held on Sunday December 18\, 8:00 am – 12:00 pm with a pitch-in lunch for all participants at the Ornithology Center 12:00pm – 1:00 pm. \n To participate\, please reach out to the count coordinator\, Aidan Rominger\, by December 1 so birding teams can be formed and count plans made in advance. Call the Ornithology Center at (317) 327-2473\, or email aidan.rominger@indy.gov. Stop by the Ornithology Center (6515 Delong Road\, Indianapolis\, IN 46278) to pick up an information packet for your assigned area the week before the count\, December 5 – 10\, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm. \n If you are a beginning birder\, you may be able to join a group that includes at least one experienced birdwatcher. In addition\, if your home is within the boundaries of the count circle\, you can report the birds that visit your feeder once you have arranged to do so with the count compiler.

DESCRIPTION:Join a naturalist for a bark ID lesson\, designed for homeschoolers and a guardian. In the wintertime\, trees without their leaves can be very intimidating for identification! Knowing trees by their bark is an excellent way to refine your identification skills and develop a greater sense of place in nature. During our lesson\, we will learn tips & tricks for tree ID and we will focus on color\, texture\, and characteristic pattern differences that will help you learn your trees in their dormant state. Binoculars will be provided to look at bark and birds as we find them and participants will be given a tree ID handout to foster continued learning. Content covered during this lesson & hike is best suited for children 10-14. We encourage homeschoolers to attend due to the time of this program. We will target a variety of waterfowl\, sparrows\, finches and more! This is a great opportunity for beginner birders to get hands on identification experience in the field with a skilled naturalist and experienced birder! The majority of the program will be hiking so dress accordingly for the colder weather. Feel free to pack a lunch as we will end the day inside the Ornithology Center classroom eating lunch together.
