Join Climate Watch\, and you’ll be doing both! As the impacts of climate change continue to unfold\, nearly two- thirds of all North American bird species could struggle to adapt. When you participate in Audubon’s newest community science project\, you’ll give Audubon scientists vital data on how birds are faring now—which guides our most effective conservation work to help them adapt. \nJoin the summer survey team on Saturday\, June 8 from 8:30 am to11:30 am. Our official meeting location is the River Road Park in Carmel\, IN.  We will split up the specific survey locations depending on the number of participants. The more participants we have\, the more survey area we can monitor! \nGet ready to count the bluebirds\, nuthatches\, goldfinches\, towhees\, or Painted Buntings you see. SUMMARY:Forest Bathing Walk
DESCRIPTION:Forest Bathing\, also known as Forest Therapy\, is a nature-based wellness practice. This experience can be described as a sensory\, immersive\, and slow walk. During a walk\, we will use our senses to “bathe” in our surroundings\, using eyes\, ears\, hands\, nose\, body\, and heart to experience the world around us. This practice will be facilitated by Certified Association of Nature & Forest Therapy (ANFT) Guide & Ornithology Center Assistant Manager\, Donna Riner. During the walk\, your guide will facilitate invitations\, or prompts\, to support sensory connection to nature and provide opportunities for sharing between invitations. We will spend approximately two hours together\, with time built in for walking short distances\, wandering\, exploring\, sitting\, and sharing. Unlike a guided hike\, this walk is short\, covering only a half mile or so. DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted the opportunity to observe migrating birds at night? Each fall\, hundreds of species of songbirds make the perilous journey from their Canadian breeding grounds\, to the jungles of South America. Join Eagle Creek Ornithology Center naturalist\, Aidan Rominger\, on Wednesday\, September 18th\, from 7:00-8:30 pm where he will go through how to properly ID many of these migrating songbird species at night\, by listening to flight calls given by each species. He will also go into depth on how to best view these migrating songbirds under the stars! The first half of the class will be inside in the classroom\, and the second half will be held in the field to listen for any migrating songbirds\, as well as see if we can view them flying past the moon using a scope and binoculars. With over 34 regularly occurring shorebird species found in Indiana annually\, shorebirds can be a fun yet challenging group of species to confidently identify. Join Eagle Creek Ornithology Center naturalist\, Aidan Rominger on Tuesday\, September 24th from 5:30-7:30pm where he will teach how to properly identify shorebirds in fall plumage\, as well as other useful tips that will make identifying these challenging birds a breeze! The first half of the class will be held inside in the Eagle Creek OC classroom. The second half of the program will be out in the field to look for any shorebirds we can find in the park\, putting our classroom skills to the test! SUMMARY:Gardening for Birds: Seed Saving
DESCRIPTION:Join us on October 8\, 2024\, from 5:30 to 7:00 PM at the Ornithology Center (OC) to learn how to prepare native plant seeds in the fall for germination over the winter\, to support wildlife\, especially birds! Join for a brief presentation followed by a garden tour\, then practice separating pre-collected seeds & build two germination containers\, one for the center and one for you to take home! Containers created by participants for the OC will be planted in the wildlife gardens in the spring. Participants can take home a seed container of their own as well to observe the final stages of germination and to plant at their own homes! \nAll materials will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring a clean plastic container (think plastic milk jug\, gallon or half or 2L soda bottle) to utilize in the workshop. Preregistration is required\, $15/participant. This program is geared towards adults with an interest in gardening with native plants\, youth ages 12+ are welcome to register with their adult guardian.
